In Memoriam: D. David Leo
05/01/1950 – 12/17/2020
It is with a heavy heart that I report the passing of an Icon in American Falconry, Goshawker extraordinaire, and dear friend, Mr. David Leo.
I first met David in 1976 while attending college in Bellingham. He had heard from some friends that another falconer had moved into the neighborhood, and showed up at my doorstep to introduce himself. As was typical of David, he had just come from the field where he had taken a duck with his Goshawk. From that moment on we became fast friends. We spent much time together not only in the fields but socially as well. Trips to NAFA meets, Breakfast in White Rock (British Columbia), many field excursions here in Washington, and much more.
While David Leo was an extraordinary austringer, he was a multi-faceted individual as well. Among many of his interests were history, scuba diving, boxing, martial arts, and medieval reenactments via the SCA. David was an avid reader, and loved to have long discussions on many topics. I feel blessed to have been the beneficiary of many such talks. I’ll miss my friend dearly, and can only hope that he has now found that perfect Goshawk.
